Consuming Ethics Symposium

Ethics of Consuming Project

University of South Australia
August 2009

Today we are seeing a mainstreaming of ethical concerns around consumption and lifestyle practices, reflecting a growing anxiety about, and sense of responsibility for, the risks and excesses of contemporary lifestyles in the ‘global north’. The forthcoming two day symposium to be held at the University of South Australia in August 2009 will bring together a range of research topics that constellate around this ‘ethical turn’ – from plastic bags, sexuality and bodies, to the food and beverage industry, to carbon offsetting and the rise of the green consumer celebrity.

The outcome will be a ground-breaking edited book on the topic and the opportunity for future research collaborations. Participants will include contributors to the collection, both Australian and international, and other researchers in the field. Completed papers will be circulated prior to the workshop, and the two days will be themed around ‘the ethics of consumption’ and ‘consuming taste’. Day two will also provide time for networking, presenting other projects in process and to develop future ideas for collaboration. Key industry figures will be invited on day two with a view to developing linkage grants with relevant researchers.
