Speaking Tour by Prof Robert C Allen

In March this year, TV scholar and media historian Professor Robert C. Allen visited Australia to discuss issues arising from his major new Federally funded research project, “Going to the Show”. This is a large-scale collaborative digital history project involving the special collections of the University of North Carolina, bringing together librarians, historians and the digital resources of cultural mapping in order to produce interactive historical maps of the social, economic and cultural landscape of cinema-going across the state of North Carolina. After giving public lectures in Brisbane and Sydney, and meeting with CRN colleagues (and their colleagues), Prof. Allen concluded his tour at the University of Wollongong, where he was joined by cultural historian Associate Professor Jeff Klenotic of the University of New Hampshire, and cultural geographer Associate Professor Sarah Elwood of the University of Washington, to participate in a series of workshops (see separate report on GIS workshop) and roundtable discussions on the opportunities and limitations of collaborative cross-disciplinary scholarship. Together these events have helped to raise the profile of GIS and other mapping tools for Australian cultural historians, while at the same time creating an opportunity for historians to extend and reframe debates that have been primarily occurring within geography about GIS use, and to share some valuable cautionary insights from their own experiences.
