One of the world’s leading researchers and teachers in water and wastewater management, Professor Paul Lant, is spearheading UQ’s short courses for environmental professionals.

Professor Lant, head of UQ’s School of Chemical Engineering and Director of the UQ-owned continuing professional development (CPD) company IWES, has managed the professional development of thousands of engineers and technical staff.

There is increasing demand in Australia for short courses covering areas such as wastewater treatment, drinking water treatment, water safety management, water recycling, integrated urban water management, water planning and desalination.

Professor Lant has received national awards for innovations in teaching and supervision of postgraduate students.

“The mission at IWES is to provide high-quality professional development short courses for environment industry professionals,” said Professor Lant.

“Courses are taught by leading industry practitioners and designed to keep busy professionals abreast of the latest trends, technologies and practices.”

He said IWES had grown rapidly over the last few years, and was now a major provider of short courses for environment professionals in Australia.

IWES is the short course provider of choice of several large organisations, including the Brisbane City Council, many State government departments in Australia, Bluescope Steel and BP.

“We work continually to innovate our course offerings and delivery. In 2011, we introduced several new courses covering areas such as coal seam gas water management and water recycling.”

“Since 2008 we have run events annually in Sydney, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Perth, and in 2010 we ran our first event in Tasmania. We have averaged 660 delegates per annum through 2007-2011.

Professor Lant is one of the four founding members of UQ’s Advanced Water Management Centre, an international centre of excellence in innovative water technology and management.

He also recently helped establish the International Water Centre, a joint initiative between four leading Australian universities to promote innovative water resources management.
