Standard
Units
Under
the new program structure a standard semester’s work, regardless
of level (such as undergraduate or postgraduate) will comprise 8
units, and a normal year’s work, 16 units.
All
programs of the same length will comprise the same number of units,
that is -
- 2-year
diploma programs = 32 units
-
3-year degrees = 48 units
- 4-year
degrees = 64 units
-
5-year degrees = 80 units
- Postgraduate
honours year = 16 units
- Graduate
certificates = 8 units
- Graduate
diplomas = 16 units
- Masters
coursework programs = minimum of 24 units (or 16 units after a
minimum of 4 year undergraduate degree)
- Professional
doctorate = minimum of 48 units
For
dual degree programs, faculties will be combining programs within
the following parameters -
-
Two 3-year single degree programs = minimum 64/maximum 80 units
-
4-year + 3-year single degree programs = minimum 80/maximum 96
units.
Most
courses (subjects) will have a unit value of 2, but some courses
of 1 unit will be available and, in special cases, courses (subjects)
of 4, 6 or 8 units will be available.
Thus,
from 2001 a student enrolled in a 3-year Arts or Science degree
program, for example, will be required to complete 48 units most
of which will be made up of 2 unit courses (subjects).
Even
in the case of dual degrees there will be no required course overload
for completion in minimum time. With regard to enrolment load, a
determination has been made that across all faculties and programs
students will be able to enrol in a maximum of 10 units for each
of first and second semester and normally 6 units maximum in summer.
