Course
Codes
Under
course standardisation a new eight character alpha-numeric coding
schema for courses (subjects) has been adopted. A schedule of new
course codes
and their equivalence with the old codes is available under
student information.
The
first four characters (alpha codes) of the code are discipline descriptors.
They relate to disciplines not departments since there is a possibility
of multiple departments/schools sharing a discipline.
The
last four digits are numeric codes. The first numeric character
reflects the level:
1
= 1st year or 1st level undergraduate subject
2 = 2nd year or 2nd level undergraduate subject
3 = 3rd year or 3rd level undergraduate subject
4 = 4th year or 4th level undergraduate subject
5 = 5th year or 5th level undergraduate subject
6 = postgraduate honours or graduate certificate or graduate diploma
7 = coursework masters
8 = professional doctorates
9 = research masters, PhD or higher doctorate
If
the same course (subject) is available at more than one level, but
requires the same level of academic rigour, only one code will normally
be assigned – at the higher level if there is any uncertainty. If
there are different expectations/outcomes, different codes will
be assigned.
The
2nd to 4th characters of the numeric code are allocated at the discretion
of faculties, with the proviso that each course (subject) must have
a unique code.
For
interdisciplinary courses (subjects), the faculty to which the course
co-ordinator belongs is responsible for allocation of the code (after
consultation among contributing parties).
New
discipline descriptors require endorsement of the Executive Dean
of the Faculty and approval of the Academic Registrar.
