Health Economics and Health Systems (HEHS)
Postgraduate and Postdoctoral (PhD and MPhil) Research Degrees in HEHS
Priority areas include, but are not limited to:
· The economics of disability;
· The economics of rehabilitation schemes and health outcomes;
· Risk, perceptions and consumer behaviour; and
· Insurance, moral hazard and adverse selection (particularly with respect to rehabilitation and disability insurance schemes).
Research students of the HEHS may be enrolled in one of a number of schools, depending upon the candidate's topic. Rehabilitation (Medical and Allied Health)
Priority areas include, but are not limited to:
- Investigation of sympathetic nervous system dysfunction in whiplash associated disorders.
- Differential effects of exercise/physical interventions on sub-group classifications of whiplash associated disorders.
- Do inflammatory processes play a role in persistent whiplash pain?
- Further characterization of neuropathic pain in whiplash and neck pain.
- Clinical Assessment of whiplash and neck pain – identifying physical and psychological factors.

Social and Behavioural Science
Priority areas include, but are not limited to:
- Long-term evaluation of psychological impact of traumatic brain injury.
- Prevention of medically-related traumatic stress.
- Web-based intervention for trauma-related injuries.
This program has a very active research training program. Currently there are postgraduate students working in the areas of psychological aspects of child and adult injury. The research program involves clinical research on prevention and intervention with children and adults who have had traumatic experiences. For children the types of traumatic experiences include motor vehicle accidents, falls and sporting injuries, burns, and head injuries. For adults the focus in on whiplash. Opportunities exist for postgraduate study in both of these areas.
