Ecosystem Development and Water-Use Characteristics of Native Plants grown on Capped Bauxite residue, Nabalco Refinery, Gove, NT
Residue from bauxite processing is a highly alkaline and saline material that is hostile to plant growth. Successful revegetation therefore requires species which can
tolerate local conditions including climatic extremes of wet and dry seasons. To investigate how species adapt to stress associated with the site, research will be undertaken
using biomonitoring techniques to determine water relations and carbon production, and in turn how these processes influence the water balance of the site. Knowledge gained
from this study will be used to recommend which species/communities are best be suited to achieving long-term sustainable revegetation at the site.
