Ecological Restoration - Restoring Rainforest on Christmas Island.

Christmas Island, situated in the Indian Ocean is a significant habitat island for a number of endangered and protected sea birds. Phosphate mining over the past 100 years has led to a fragmented landscape.

In 2000 the CMLR developed a rainforest rehabilitation plan with the aim to restore primary habitat and to protect existing sea bird habitat from further degradation.

A monitoring programme developed in the plan will ensure that future rehabilitation efforts are effective and successful.
