Competition under control? - Replacing exotic pastures with native ecosystems at central Queensland coal mines

The CMLR, in collaboration with BHP Coal and Gregory Mine, has been investigating the possibilities of returning mined land that has already been stabilised with exotic pasture grasses, back to native species communities. This study has included:
  • An assessment of the advantages and/or benefits that the initial sowing of pasture grasses may have on the development of mine soils
  • Experiments to control grass competition using a combination of herbicide, fire and cultivation, followed by resowing with native species
