| Wendy and her brother with the then new Union sculpture |
Wendy Jeans, Finance Officer in the School of Engineering and University employee for 25 years, grew up playing at the St Lucia campus.
While for most people UQ is a place of learning, for small children in the 1960s, it was a magical playground. I lived nearby at Boomerang Road West. At the Vet School, I patted horses and met dogs wearing Elizabethan collars (to prevent scratching). I climbed trees, fed the ducks, and dared my brother Geoffrey to swim the lake to the island. He did: I chickened out. Outside the Union complex there is a modernist Len Shillam sculpture, appropriately named Union. It was beside a fountain, and great to climb. Years later, my daughter Rachel would play in university fountains.
