On 14 April 2010, Dr Tony Haymet, Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), told the audience at the third Centenary oration that about 5000 miniature robots are floating in oceans around the globe, constantly monitoring temperatures, salinity and other data.
