Self portraits from the collection showcases a selection of works that embrace and challenge the idea of the self portrait in contemporary art.

Whether artists are using the self portrait to mask or reveal the self, or employ non-representational modes as a form of self-portrayal, it is clear that the genre of the self portrait has been revitalised in recent years.  Included in the exhibition are Del Kathryn Barton’s 2008 Archibald Prize-winning painting and works by artists such as William Yang.

The National Collection of Artists’ Self Portraits is an important focus area of The University of Queensland Art Collection.  Established in 2004, it builds on self portraits collected prior to this date, with new acquisitions acknowledging past conventions and forward-looking innovations. Works are also acquired through The University of Queensland’s bi-annual National Artists’ Self-Portrait Prize (entries by invitation only).
