Phil Weinstein, Deputy Head of the School of Population Health

Philip Weinstein, Professor of Public and Environmental Health, is a second-generation UQ staff member, with an unusual set of academic skills by modern standards.

My father, Norman Weinstein, was a Senior Lecturer in Theoretical Physics at UQ in the 1960s, before taking up an Associate Professorship in English at the University of Copenhagen.  He was a fine example of multidisciplinary scholarly activity, fostered in universities from medieval times.

I have followed my father to UQ, as a public health physician with postgraduate degrees in French and Zoology and fluency in a number of European languages.  It is still possible to marry these skills in a creative and supportive research environment, as I did to produce an historical toxicology paper that required me to learn Old Norse.
