Australian composers and performers who have been associated with UQ's former ensemble-in-residence, Perihelion, gather together to discuss the creative interaction between artists in the formation of a living musical culture.

As part of its Centenary celebrations, The University of Queensland is hosting a panel discussion and performance celebrating Perihelion, the groundbreaking clarinet, viola, cello and piano ensemble established by the School of Music in the 1988.

ABC Classics’ Martin Buzacott will chair a discussion with Andrew Ford, Colin Spiers, Roger Smalley and Stephen Cronin, four composers associated with the former UQ Music ensemble.  The panel will discuss the creative collaboration that occurs between artists and the impact university ensembles in residence have in the creation of new music and the development of a living musical culture.

A special reunion performance by former Perihelion members Associate Professor Patricia Pollett, Philippa Robinson, Carson Dron and Katherine Philip will feature Tyalgum written by Rob Davidson in 1997, then a PhD student in composition at the University. The work was released on Perihelion’s 1998 CD tangerine.
