The University of Queensland Stiglitz Centenary Oration presented by the Economic Society of Australia in association with the UQ School of Economics and the UQ Business School.
Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz is the inaugural Rodney Wylie Eminent Visiting Fellow to The University of Queensland.

Freefall: free markets and the sinking of the global economy
On 26 July 2010, internationally acclaimed economist and Nobel Laureate, Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz, explained the circumstances in which markets do not work well, and how selective government intervention could improve their performance.
Professor Stiglitz delivered the sixth UQ Centenary Oration on his visit to Australia as the inaugural speaker for the Eminent Speaker Series hosted by the Economic Society of Australia.

About the speaker
Professor Stiglitz is currently a Professor at Columbia University in New York and Chair of Columbia University’s Committee on Global Thought. Professor Stiglitz was a member of the Council of Economic Advisers from 1993-95, during the Clinton administration, and served as CEA chairman from 1995-97. He then became Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President of the World Bank from 1997-2000.
In 2008 he was asked by the French President Nicolas Sarkozy to chair the Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress, which released its final report in September 2009. In 2009 he was appointed by the President of the United Nations General Assembly as chair of the Commission of Experts on Reform of the International Financial and Monetary System, which also released its report in September 2009.
