Graeme’s crew on the St Lucia Reach
Graeme’s crew on the St Lucia Reach

Graeme McIlveen, Senior Research Fellow in the Sustainable Minerals Institute, is one of the many UQ staff members who is a member of a UQ sporting club.

I row at UQ Boat Club with the Masters DEF men, a mix of staff, alumni and locals.  I am the grandson of a WW1 soldier who did not return from France.  I asked, on the morning of ANZAC Day this year, while our eight was out rowing up-river near the tree-lined banks at St Lucia golf course in the pre-dawn light, that we stop rowing, float with the current and hold a Minute's Silence.  The crew agreed and we did.  I could only hear the bush birds calling and the water lapping.  A good thing to do.  Very moving.
