From Ideas to Action: ‘Political Will’ in International Decisionmaking
Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AO, QC delivered the second Centenary Oration and the Inaugural Annual Lecture for the School of Political Science and International Studies in Brisbane on 31 March 2010.
Former Australian Foreign Minister, Gareth Evans, spoke on important foreign policy issues facing our world currently, especially the protection of human rights and the need to reduce the dangers of nuclear weapons. He discussed the role of states like Australia and the part played by civil society and universities in energising foreign policy development and implementation.
About the speaker
Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AO QC has been Chancellor of the Australian National University since January 2010, an Honorary Professorial Fellow at The University of Melbourne since July 2009, is Co-Chair of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament whose report Eliminating Nuclear Threats was published in December 2009, and is President Emeritus of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group, the independent global conflict prevention and resolution organisation which he led from 2000 to 2009.
