How has Australia responded to swine influenza? Can we learn something from the unsatisfactory time to bring out a vaccine, and can this inform future policy about where further research is urgently needed? Trends overseas suggest it will soon be possible to radically cut reaction times, thus shortening the time to first vaccine availability. This seminar will provide an overview of current vaccine developments as well as provide a brief overview of ongoing research at UQ which, through a combination of biotechnology and nanotechnology, aims to develop new approaches that could deliver influenza vaccines within weeks, not months, of a new strain emerging. If we can indeed develop such a capability, might we indeed be able to eradicate influenza, in much the same way as we eradicated smallpox?

Most vaccines are delivered by a needle and syringe – a device first invented in 1853. Many of us do not like needle injections, but few people know the needle’s key vaccine limitation: it places vaccines into muscle, which has few immune cells, thereby holding back many existing and candidate vaccines. In Professor Kendell's presentation, you will learn about new emerging delivery technologies designed to overcome this problem, by targeting vaccines to our immunological ‘sweet spot’ within the skin. In particular, he will discuss the Nanopatch: which in addition to improved immune responses (with lower doses), is also a pain-free, needle-free device that is cheap to manufacture and is expected to remove the need for refrigerating vaccines

Driving is an activity that more Australians are doing, and for longer, taking advantage of retirement and our beautiful country. Driving skills are based largely on experience, so most older drivers actually have an edge here. But physical illness and memory problems can interfere with safe driving. Get some tips here on how to ensure you are safe behind the wheel.

Nanometer-sized dumbbells which are made up of two nanoparticles connected with a DNA linker, only form in the presence of pathogen-related biomolecules. Once formed, the nanodumbbells are detected and counted with an electronic device, to give an exact and direct number of pathogenic molecules in the sample. This new diagnostic methods, being developed in Dr. Dimitrov’s Lab, are more sensitive, more accurate and less costly than existing technologies and have the potential to transform the way infectious diseases are being detected.

The need for new thinking in almost every aspect of our lives becomes ever more important as global populations expand and resources dwindle. Water supply to our cities, ecological sustainability, and Australia's export future are just some of the issues which loom large within our rapidly changing world. How we solve these problems will ultimately come down to our technological base and our willingness to face up to the scientific and economic realities of our changing world. The question is, Is Australia ready to meet these challenges?

Nanotechnology has the potential to impact all products manufactured now and in the future. It has the potential to change the way we all live. It is only now that we are starting to understand how nature uses nanotechnology for its benefit. Why are butterfly wings so brightly coloured with intricate designs? How do gecko feet adhere to surfaces? From the understanding of the fundamentals of nanoscience, scientists are developing, for example, new self-cleaning paints, in which their nanostructure nodules produce a superhydrophobic surface.
