Oration topic:
On the Centenary: The Next 100 Years.  Queensland, Australia and the World.

UQ alumnus, Dr Andrew Liveris is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Dow Chemical Company, a $45 billion global specialty chemical, advanced materials, agrosciences and plastics company based in Midland, Michigan. 

On 22 November 2010, Andrew delivered the eighth Oration in the Centenary Oration series.  He spoke from his unique experience as an Australian, a University of Queensland graduate, and a global business leader.  He called for innovation in business models and public policy to foster an advanced manufacturing sector in Australia, which would export Australian ideas and technologies.

About the speaker

Andrew Liveris' 34-year Dow career has spanned manufacturing, engineering, sales, marketing, and business and general management.  He has spent the bulk of his career in Asia, where he was general manager for the company's operations in Thailand, and later President of all Asia-Pacific operations.  He began his Dow career in 1976 in Australia.

He has been a member of Dow's Board of Directors since February 2004, CEO since November 2004 and was elected as Chairman of the Board effective April 1, 2006.
 
Andrew was born in Darwin and attended The University of Queensland, graduating with a bachelors degree (first-class honors) in Chemical Engineering.  He was awarded an honorary doctorate in science by UQ as well as being named Alumnus of the Year for 2005. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of The Institute of Chemical Engineers, as well as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
 
Andrew serves on the board of directors of IBM and Citigroup.  He is president of the International Council of Chemical Associations, vice chairman of the US Business Council, a member of the executive committee of the US Business Roundtable, a member of the US President’s Export Council, the US-India CEO Forum, the Peterson Institute for International Economics, the American Australian Association, and a trustee of Tufts University.
