October 2014

Welcome to the Centre's Newsletter!

October has finally arrived bringing the Centre's biggest annual event the Communication for Social Change Awards. On Tuesday 28, our winners will be presented the awards by Deputy Vice- Chancellor UQ International Professor Monique Skidmore.

Individual winner Barat Ali Batoor, and Clare Rewcastle and Peter John Jaban representing our organisational winner Radio Free Sarawak will give an insight into their work and how the Internet has transformed the space for advocacy in a free half-day symposium on Advocacy, Investigative Journalism and the Internet. Register here to attend
Last month we were very lucky to have Professor Mohan J. Dutta, author of Communicating Social Change: Structure, Culture and Agency at the School of Journalism and Communication, talking to our staff and students about his approach to culture-centred development.

In October we caught up with our alumna  Dr Vira Riyandari Ramelan from Indonesia to find out about her exciting job working as Senior Communication Consultant for the Low Carbon Support Programme (LCS) in Jakarta, Indonesia.

In Student Spotlight we would like you to meet Bernardo Alayza from Peru. Bernardo is starting his PhD under the supervision of Centre Director Elske van de Fliert and A/Professor Eric Louw.

In From the Centre we congratulate PhD candidate Tamara Plush on her recent online presentation as part of the Orecomm Voice and Matter conference in Malmo, Sweden.
