Welcome to the newsletter for the
Centre for Communication & Social Change
In May the Centre held its biggest event of the year, the 2013 Communication for Social Change Awards! If you missed it, you can watch a video of the ceremony, see photos and read student articles on the event on our Awards Highlights Page.
On May 30 we were lucky enough to have Ricardo Ramirez and Dal Broadhead visit us and share insights on the book Ricardo co-wrote with Wendy Quarry Communication for Another Development: Listening Before Telling, as well as their new work into utilisation focused evaluation in communication for development research.
We are happy to announce that we have recently launched a book series with Palgrave Macmillan which will explore new thinking in communication for social change.
In Student Spotlight we have PhD student Tamara Plush talking about her recent case study presentation on participatory video being utilised as a way to empower children in Vietnam, as well as PhD student Elena Block talking about the political communication style of Hugo Chávez.
At the Centre we are saying goodbye to Communications and Logistics Officer, Rhian Deutrom, who is graduating this month and has found a job as a journalist working in the Whitsundays. At the same time we welcome Claudia Sepulveda Astengo who joins us from Chile as our new Research Assistant.
Our team has also been busy at the IAMCR conference in Dublin, hosting knowledge exchanges between Mongolia and Australia and helping remote communities in PNG map their future using visual research methods.
As always we appreciate all feedback about the newsletter and input on what you would like to see in the future. Please contact the Centre Facilitator and Project Officer, Samantha Ryan with your thoughts.
