February/March 2018

Hello and welcome to our first newsletter for 2018!
As the 2018 academic year kicks off, the Centre for Communication and Social Change (CfCSC) is delighted to welcome new students and colleagues as we all look forward to a great year of research, teaching, and collaboration.
In this edition of our newsletter we reflect on our annual progress report.  The report highlights the remarkable achievements made in research, teaching, and engagement by CfCSC’s Associates, Affiliates, and Students in 2016/2017.

In the ‘Student Spotlight’ section, we share the experiences and thoughts of four excellent participants in our new Communication for Social Change: Foundations (COMU7102) course in Semester 2, 2017.  Successfully introduced as part of the 32 unit Master of Communication program, the course is compulsory for all students irrespective of if they specialise in ‘Communication for Social Change’ or ‘Public Relations and Professional Communication’.

An overview of the incredible work accomplished by our Masters students in the Participatory Media Production course (COMU7016) is showcased in this edition. The students produced short films in collaboration with the Pasifika community Logan/UQ School of Public Health, and the UQ Pro Bono Centre/various Community Legal Centres. Films were screened at two public events, one held at the Gould Adams Park Hall, and the other at UQ (St Lucia Campus).

In the ‘News from the Centre’ section, we caught up with Centre Associate Dr Scott Downman to discuss his new book Journalism for Social Change in Asia: Reporting Human Rights. Co-authored with Dr Kasun Ubayasiri, the book is an engaging read and a timely contribution to the field.

Be sure to check out the ‘March Opportunities’ page for information on a number of work, conferences and learning opportunities.
We are always eager to hear your ideas and feedback about our newsletter and the work of the Centre so if you would like to contact us please send an email to
