 Online diabetes survey

The Centre has undertaken a world-wide online survey of diabetic cat owners and found that many were not using the best insulin for cats, and were not fully aware of the importance of
introducing a special diabetes diet.  This dietary component, consisting of a low-carbohydrate diet specifically created for cats, together with a long-acting insulin and a reduction in weight, can have extremely positive effects if this regime is started soon after diagnosis. Most significantly, with this treatment combination, the majority of cats can be weaned off insulin after a few months. They must, however, remain on the special diabetes diet.

As a result of these findings, the Centre is now focusing on increasing awareness among veterinary students and veterinarians to ensure the importance of the appropriate insulin choice
and diet is filtered through to veterinarians in practice.
