UQ Boilerhouse Community Engagement Centre

Our History

The UQ Boilerhouse Community Engagement Centre (formerly Community Service and Research Centre) was developed by The University of Queensland’s Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences with assistance from the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International & Development).

Led by its inaugural Director, Bruce Muirhead, the Boilerhouse began operating in July 1999 at the new Ipswich campus. Its core purpose was to find new ways for universities and communities to interact and work together with a particular focus on engaging UQ with the local regions & communities.

Since then the Boilerhouse has built its research profile, has developed wide reaching community teaching programs and has been involved in successful community projects. Under the direction of Associate Professor Michael Cuthill it continues to explore creative ways to bring people together to address local issues.
