Profile and Research Interests
 
Karen joined the University of Queensland/ Blue Care Research & Practice Development Centre in March 2009. She is currently appointed as Project Manager on the Comprehensive Evidence Based Palliative Approach in Residential Aged Care (CEBPARAC) project – a two year project funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing under the Encouraging Best Practice in Residential Aged Care (EBPRAC) program. The aim of this project is to implement and evaluate an evidence-based model of palliative care using existing evidence-based guidelines and educational resources.
 
Karen has worked as a Research Officer/ Project Coordinator since 1995, with experience in social science and public health research. Prior to her current position, Karen worked at the Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) as their Program Development and Evaluation Project Manager. She evaluated internal CCQ programs including their Helpline, Financial Assistance Program and Medical Equipment Loan Scheme. Karen worked in the university system (University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology) between 1995 and 2007. She worked on several research projects including: the Caring in Aged-Care Project; Falls Prevention in Older People; Colorectal Cancer Screening in a Rural Community; Acceptability of FOBT Screening; Cognitive Ageing Project; and Child Anxiety Project. As the Public Health Research Information Network (PHRIN) co-ordinator, Karen was responsible for developing and managing internal professional development activities and resources for research staff and students. Karen has a particular interest in ageing research and has endeavoured to secure positions in this field whenever possible. She has also worked in the aged care sector as a diversional therapist.
 
Karen has a postgraduate honours degree majoring in psychology. She also has extensive research and statistics training. In 2007 she obtained a Master of Applied Science (Research) in public health.
