High School Visits
For high school students, there are two options for visiting the museum. The first is a guided tour of the museum which lasts one hour, during which, time is given to fill out interactive worksheets.
For those wishing to provide their students with a more in-depth experience, there is a two hour option. The first hour consists of the guided tour. During the second hour, the students take part in a workshop in which artefacts from the collection are taken out, and students are given the opportunity to handle the objects, and to examine them at close quarters. These workshops are tailored to a number of key sites and themes in the ancient world and also link strongly with the Senior Ancient History Syllabus.
All workshops have an archaeological focus, but also encourage students to think about the strengths and limitations of archaeological information, with reference to a number of relevant ancient sources for comparison. Students use the archaeological materials provided as evidence for the lives of people in the ancient world and link these back to broader themes such as power and politics, religion and funerary customs and conlfict and warfare. The program has been developed to supplement and extend the Senior Syllabus by building on the topics studied more boaradly, while also providing some key case studies which may not be covered in depth during the course of their study.
This second option is recommended in order to get the most out of the visit. The tour and workshop program can be tailored to individual needs on request.
If your group is larger than 25 people, we will usually split it into smaller groups. The best time for visiting the museum is in the morning, though other times can be negotiated.
Workshop Themes
Four seperate workshops are available which have been tailored to cover a variety of topics in the ancient world, focusing on the use of artefacts to construct the stories of people in the past, the interpretation of evidence (historical and archaeological), continuity and change. Workshops can be selected from the following list:
- Ancient Egypt: The Valley of the Kings
- Ancient Rome: A Romano-British Farmstead
- Ancient Greece: Olympia
- Museums, Archaeology and Artefacts
