Except where the design obtrudes, the legends on Constantius II coins are regularly in unbroken style. The action on the reverse is vivid and designed to fill the small, round surface available: the shape of the attacker curves with the coin. There is no formal posing.

Constantius died of fever in 361, aged forty-five, after declaring his brother-in-law Julian his successor and sole master of the Empire.
