 c111

Roman Sestertius Coins

Inv. No.: c111
Date: A.D. 163(Dec.)-164.
Weight: 27.62g

Obv.: L. Verus, bareheaded.
L.AVREL.VERVS AVG.ARMENIACVS

Rev.: Verus, on horseback, thrusting with spear at a fallen Armenian.
TR.P.IIII IMP.II COS.II S.C.

For the obverse, see on coin c110. Clearly the reverse must be taken symbolically, not literally. The type virtually reproduces one occurring, with more justification, on a sestertius of Domitian and a number of bronze coins of Trajan, except that here the horseman is clearly Verus himself.

Comparanda:
RIC, M. Aurelius 1402.
