Alumni Friends of The University of Queensland Inc was formerly known as The Alumni Association of The University of Queensland Inc. The association was formed in 1967 by the (then) Vice-Chancellor, Sir Fred Schonell and was the first of the many Australian university alumni associations subsequently formed. On 17th May, 2008, the association held a Special General Meeting which voted to change the association's name to Alumni Friends of The University of Queensland Inc. This was undertaken to avoid confusion between the newly-formed UQAlumni network being developed by the University. This name-change was subsequently approved by the Queensland Government's Office of Fair Trading on 7th July, 2008.
Although the association has changed its name, its mission remains unchanged:
*.....to promote and further the interests of The University of Queensland; and
*.....to foster mutually beneficial relations amongst its Alumni and those in the wider community with an interest in the University.
Membership of the association is open to everyone who has an interest in the University and, if you are not yet a member, you are invited to apply.
Apart from a general membership, the association has a variety of Special Interest Groups which provide support to their school or discipline or organise general educational, recreational and fund-raising activities. These are:
- UQ Alumni Bookfair
- Dentistry Alumni
- Friends of Antiquity
- Medical Alumni
- Physiotherapy Alumni
- Three Score Club
- Veterinary Alumni
