Dr. Jason Cole is a NHMRC Biomedical Training Fellow at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Cole’s research focuses on the invasive disease mechanism of serotype M1T1 Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus; GAS). Over the past 30 years, the resurgence in the number of severe invasive GAS diseases, such as streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome and necrotizing fasciitis, have been attributed to the global dissemination of the M1T1 GAS clone. By identifying the M1T1 GAS virulence factors essential for severe invasive disease initiation, the objective is to develop novel therapeutic agents to combat this important human pathogen.
