UQ's Sunflower Competition for school students
UQ's Sunflower Competition for school students

Three thousand students from more than 80 schools are hoping to prove they have what it takes to grow the heaviest sunflower for 2015.

Their aim is to grow the largest and heaviest sunflowers and beat the 4.45 kilogram record.

Now in its 16th year, UQ’s Sunflower Competition promotes the science behind agronomy and horticulture.

Approximately 300 students and teachers will attend the official weigh in day on 19 May at the UQ’s Gatton campus.

Students in remote and regional areas who are unable to attend the weigh-in day can enter the Communicating Science category for a chance to win prizes.

Who: High school students and teachers from Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia

What: Planting sunflower seeds to compete in the annual UQ Sunflower competition

When: Planting day Tuesday, 24 February | Weigh in day 19 May

The competition is supported by the Australian Sunflower Association, Dow Agro Sciences, Pacific Seeds, Queensland Agriculture Teachers Association, Agrifood Skills Australia, UQ Gatton Past Students Association and AgForce.
