The Storytelling of Science

Presented by: Australian Science Communicators and BrisScience
THIS EVENT WAS SOLD OUT

2014 marks 60 years of the Australian Academy of Science, 50 years of the ABC Science unit, and 20 years of the Australian Science Communicators (ASC). To celebrate, the ASC and BrisScience presented a very special triple-anniversary event.

As attention spans shrink, engaging others with science is getting harder, but does this have to be the case? Whether it is Archimedes taking a bath or an apple falling on Newton’s head, stories are far more engaging and easier to remember than the facts science has to offer.

The ABC, the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Science Communicators, and BrisScience bought Australia’s top scientists and communicators together to explore the storytelling of science. The best in the nation told their own story of science, and drove their discussion on the stories behind cutting edge science. From the origin of the universe to the exciting technologies that will change our future, this event was unmissable.

The event's panel of storytellers included: Tim Flannery (Climate Council), Prof Jenny Graves (Australian Academy of Science), Lynne Malcolm (ABC Science), Dr Jesse Shore (Prismatic Sciences) and Dr Andrew Stephenson (The University of Queensland).

QAAFI Seminar

The psychology of drought stress response in crops

Dr Scott Chapman, 'The psychology of drought stress response in crops' -- To develop yield in heat or drought stress conditions, crops must manage water use to both 'keep their cool' and to 'save water for later'. This applies over both short-term (hours) and long-term (weeks) time periods. Some of the ways that plants respond can be described in 'psychology' terms - hare vs tortoise at the crop level, greed vs collaboration at the plant level.
