Applicants eligible for either award must already be enrolled at a recognised Queensland tertiary institute and engaged in a relevant biophysical or socio-economic aspect of agriculture, animal production, fisheries, forestry, natural resource management or food security. The Honours Research Scholarship is open to applicants enrolled either at Honours Level (3-year degree course) or Fourth Year (4-year degree course); it takes the form of a bursary of $3500 payable directly to the awardee to cover living or travel expenses. The Postgraduate Research Award is open to students enrolled at postgraduate (usually Masters or PhD) level; in this instance the award, to a maximum value of $3500 per awardee, can be used for airfares and other travel costs, accommodation and subsistence, and/or operational research costs.

csiro-logoEach year, CSIRO supports PhD Scholarships for students to work on projects relevant to priority CSIRO research topic areas. Students are co-supervised by researchers in an Australian university and CSIRO. These are top-up scholarships and are available to high quality students who are enrolled in a PhD program at an Australian University. These top-up scholarships offer $7,000 per year plus a generous operating budget (full scholarships available in certain circumstances). Scholarships are available thorougout the year. At the time of submitting an application for a CSIRO PhD Scholarship, students must have, or expect to gain, first class honours or equivalent in a relevant research area. Students must also expect to receive an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or university equivalent commencing in that year.

They include tertiary education and travelling scholarships. The Adrian Turton Memorial Scholarship offers $10,000 annually to a DIAA member wishing to undertake travel and/or a course of study relevant to the dairy industry.

The key objective of the dairy manufacturing scholarship program is to attract passionate new graduates and diploma holders into the dairy industry and train them in relevant aspects of dairy manufacturing. Endeavour Mobility Grants support Australian undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational education and training students to have an international study experience that contributes to their Australian qualification. Through short-term study, practicums, clinical placements, internships, and volunteer projects, students are able to immerse themselves into the academic and social cultures in all regions, strengthening their global knowledge and experience. wheatGrains Industry Research Scholarships and undergraduate honours scholarships are offered to encourage training in disciplines that contribute to the research, development and extension priorities of the GRDC and the Australian grains industry.  See more at their website. The closing date for applications is the last Wednesday in October each calendar year. Students successful in securing a base scholarship in 2015 such as an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent are encouraged to apply for the above scholarships in 2016.

student with laptopThe Horizon Scholarship, offered by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation, provides $5,000 per year for the duration of a student's university degree. To be eligible for The Horizon Scholarship students must be studying a degree related to agriculture, such as agricultural science, rural science, livestock/animal science, veterinary science, agribusiness, agricultural economics, resource management, sustainability, food security or plant science. The scholarship is open to students who are entering their first year of university(with a maximum two year gap between high school and tertiary study).

MLA Scholarships

Closed for 2016 | Available to students undertaking postgraduate studies (usually PhDs) in areas related to the meat and livestock industry. See the website for details.

sheepMLA Scholarships awards facilitate research and training in areas of practical value to the Australian beef, sheepmeat and goatmeat industries. The MLA scholarship program supports students undertaking postgraduate studies (mostly PhDs) for the three years of their candidature. Students receive a stipend higher than Australian Postgraduate Award stipends, plus support for project costs.

rural studentThe Queensland Agriculture Teachers’ Association is offering an annual bursary valued of $5000. Students who studied senior Agricultural Science at a secondary school in Queensland in years 11-12, and who have now applied to QTAC for entry to study either the Bachelor of Agribusiness or the Bachelor of Sustainable Agriculture (or the dual degree) at UQ should apply. Applicants will need to provide evidence of their enrolment with the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences as well as their academic records and a letter of support from their current Agricultural Science teacher. Closed for 2016 | The deadline for Semester 2 applications is Monday, 8 August 2016. The scholarship programs are open to both UQ Honours and Research Higher Degree (RHD) students across all disciplines.

Applications are now open for The University of Queensland’s Island Research Stations Postgraduate Scholarships. The scholarship programs are open to both UQ Honours and Research Higher Degree (RHD) students across all disciplines for research at the University's Moreton Bay Research Station on North Stradbroke Island or Heron Island Research Station on the Great Barrier Reef. Two rounds of scholarships will be awarded every year - one round for research to commence in Semester 1 and another for research commencing in Semester 2. The deadline for Semester 2 applications is 5:00pm Monday, 8 August 2016.

Australian National University (ANU) Summer Research Scholarships

Taking place from late November to late January, this scholarship is aimed at helping students make an informed decision about studying a higher degree by research. Third or final year undergraduate students (including current Honours students) will receive full board on campus, a weekly allowance, return travel to Canberra and an opportunity to undertake a short research project on an approved topic.  Details. CSIRO Summer studentships with CSIRO

Students will get hands on research experience work on their own project in one of the world’s leading plant laboratories in Australia’s national research agency.

During this ten (10) week program, students will be paid $1,319.35 per fortnight with all equipment and material costs covered by the CSIRO. Enquiries

 

UQ Winter Scholarships

UQ Winter Scholarships

Closed for 2016 | Available between June and July 2016 to students who wish to participate in an undergraduate, honours or masters by coursework research program and have completed at least one year of study at UQ.

student-laboratoryUQ Winter Research Program provides students with an opportunity to participate in undergraduate research programs, gain valuable academic and professional skills, have an opportunity to develop links with indurstry and academic contacts, and are able to test drive research before embarking on further research studies or higher degree research projects. 

The UQ Winter Research Program is open to undergraduate, honours, or masters by coursework students, who:

  • Are currently enrolled at UQ, or another Australian, or international university;
  • Have completed at least one year of study at UQ;
  • Studying for a degree relevant to the research discipline;
  • Have a high level of academic achievement during their undergraduate degree;
  • Are able to demonstrate a high level of English language proficiency; and
  • Are eligible for a visa to visit Australia if from an international university. 
All UQ Winter Research Program applicants are automatically considered for an OUE Winter Research Grant upon application. To be eligible for the grant scholars will need to meet the following conditions:
  • Participate in the program for a minimum of four weeks between 17 June - 26 July; and
  • Work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
Allocation of OUE Winter Research grants will be considered by a selection panel and will be based on:
  • Research units nomination/ranking; and
  • Academic merit of the applicant and alignment with UQ’s research strengths.
Please note, that the decision of the panel is final. OUE reserves the right to reject any funding request, and there is no guarantee of funding to scholars in every research unit. Scholars who qualify for OUE funding will receive a $1000 OUE Winter Research grant, paid as a one-off payment by the OUE in week two of the program. If a scholarship recipient withdraws from the program, their scholarship will need to be returned in full. No travel grants will be offered as a part of the UQ Winter Research program.

The prize is given to the student enrolled in an undergraduate agricultural science program who gets the highest overall marks in AGRC1020 or BIOL1020 and AGRC2001.
