Over the past three years, Moggill Markets has been generously supporting research opportunities for agricultural science research students at The University of Queensland through cash prizes.

Moggill Market is a small not-for-profit enterprise run by a committee of volunteers who value supporting local enterprises and as such see the benefit in encouraging students researching agricultural science.

Erica Parker, founder and committee member of the Moggill Markets, said when they first met with Professor Peer Schenk three years ago, they were struck by the enthusiasm of the Honours research students he coordinates in the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences.

“We decided on our prize as a way to encourage young UQ scientists to make a difference at the cutting edge of agricultural research,” Ms Parker said.

The three recipients of this year’s Moggill Markets Prize are Candice Jones, Boer Bao and Laura Haaima, all of whom are undertaking an Honours research year for their agriculturally-focussed science degrees.

For Candice Jones the prize money is helping her build stress-tolerant soybeans, something that is a necessity in a climatically changing world that will alter tolerance of plants to potassium, nitrate and salinity stress.

Boer Bao is using her prize funds to support work on finding sustainable animal food. She hopes to identify an effective strain of micro-algae which farmers will be able to grow as a stock feed.

Laura Haaima is using her prize to attend the prestigious Agricultural Bioscience International Conference which will be held this September, 2015, in Melbourne. Laura’s aim is to gain experience in presenting research results to bioscience experts at this conference which is focused on “New thinking, new discoveries and new applications”.
