'We Talk, You Listen' is a joint project between the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit and ACPACS. This project is aimed at developing a new listening process between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. At its heart is the creation of “safe spaces” for Aboriginals to tell stories with White Australians engaging in appreciative listening. The White Australian Group will then ( separately) discuss what they have heard and what it means and go back into a dialogical process with their Aboriginal interlocutors about what has been heard and how to respond to these messages. It is hoped that this will result in new ways of thinking about grief, mourning, justice and peace and the reactivation of reconciliation processes when the time is ripe for such discussions. This is being trialled in Brisbane initially and will be expanded if it seems like a useful process.
