Conflict Coaching Network presents: Conflict Coaching in the Defence Force with Helen Marks

This presentation will demonstrate how valuable conflict coaching is as part of aworkplace conflict management program. Helen Marks manages The Directorate of Alternative Resolutions and Equity which is responsible for the provision of advice on equity related matters and the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution processes across Defence. Conflict coaching is one of the many services provided by the Directorate. The process provides a process of ‘first choice’ for most personnel and is also a useful framework for developing ‘interactive problem solving’ skills in our Fairness and Resolution Centre staff, ADR practitioners, managers and HR professionals.

Makhampom's visual and theatre art approach to conflict resolution
Dr Richard Barber

About This Presentation
The presentation will involve an introduction to Makhampom’s visual and theatre art workshop approach for conflict resolution. Dr Barber will introduce Makhampom and his background together with the context he lives and works in. He will outline several of the workshop activities, using photo and video material, referencing case studies from Makhampom’s work in communities with localised disputes, refugee camps and conflict situations (Sri Lanka, Burma, southern Thailand). This will include:

    * Exploring Context – Conflict Mapping Exercises
    * Roots of Conflict (Power, Identity, Discrimination) – Conflict-based Games
    * Conflict Resolution – Image Theatre

About Dr Richard Barber
Dr Richard Barber is an Australian theatre and community worker, currently based in Thailand with the Makhampom Foundation. He has a 20-year background in political activist and human rights work with organisations such as Oxfam Australia, ACFOA, and Forum Asia, concurrently developing public performance and community theatre practice. During this time, he was actively involved in the conflict contexts of East Timor, Aceh, and Mindanao and was one of the organisers of the first peace talks with the Free Aceh Movement. He started working with Makhampom in 1996, developing a theatre-based methodology for conflict resolution and peace building. This has led to workshops throughout the Asia-Pacific region, the publication of The Art of Peace, and an ongoing program with the southern insurgency, with refugees from Burma, and with stateless hill-tribe communities in Thailand. In 2007, Richard completed his PhD at the Monash University School of Theatre and Drama Studies.
