Background
Sam is a senior lecturer in Conflict Resolution at the Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (ACPACS) at the University of Queensland and is the Coordinator of the Postgraduate Conflict Resolution Program. Sam has a legal background and practiced as a lawyer for some years before moving into education and training. She is a Nationally Accredited Mediator and completed advanced negotiation training at Harvard Law School. She is also a CINERGY trained Conflict Coach. She has taught law and conflict resolution for the past twelve years to university students, lawyers and other professionals in mediation, arbitration, conflict management and communication skills. She also has a consultancy practice in facilitation, mediation and conflict coaching.
She completed a Masters of Laws in 1997, primarily focusing on Trade Practices Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution. She completed a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching and her PhD in 2005. She also has a BA (double major in French).
She received a University Teaching Excellence Award in 2003, and a National Carrick Citation for an Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning in 2006. In 2006 she was also appointed a Fellow of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australia. Sam is also the Associate Editor of the Legal Education Review, and is a member of the Executive of the Australasian Law Teachers' Association.
Sam is also an experienced researcher and has published widely in the area of law and conflict resolution. She is skilled in both quantitative and qualititive research, as well as reviewing and evaluating organisational and government conflict resolution programs and procedures.
Research Interests
Sam’s PhD examined the impact of different methods of dispute resolution on the health outcomes of personal injury litigants. Her research interests include conflict resolution; education and training; the legal regulation of personal relationships; and the relationships between conflict resolution and psychology, language and literature.
