AMED
(Allied and Complementary Medicine Database)
This is a database produced by the Health Care Information Service of the British
Library. It includes complemenary medicine resources from nursing, palliative
care and several professions allied to medicine. It is available through university
libraries, or by subscription.
CINAHL
(Cumulative Nursing and Allied Health Literature)
An index to the nursing literature and to a range of holistic and complementary
medicine literature. Available through university libraries or by subscription.
EMBASE
An international database to citations covering the biomedical, pharmacological
and drug literature. Available through university libraries or by subscription.
HOM-INFORM:
The British Homeopathic Library is a library and information service dedicated
to the research and practice of homeopathy. It includes abstracts from homeopathic
journals world-wide.
MANTIS:
The MANTIS Database is the largest source of osteopathic, chiropractic and
manual medical literature in the world. It contains abstracts from peer-reviewed
chiropractic, osteopathic and manual medicine journals.
MedLine
Plus Alternative Medicine
MedlinePlus will direct you to information to help answer health
questions. MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information
from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government
agencies and health-related organizations.
NAPRALERT:
Abstracts of the information on natural products including, biological and
pharmacological activity, plant chemistry and taxonomic distribution. More
than 200,000 scientific papers and reviews are included in NAPRALERT
HERBMED:
An interactive, electronic herbal database providing hyperlinked access to
the scientific data underlying the use of herbs for health. It is an impartial,
evidence-based information resource provided by the nonprofit Alternative
Medicine Foundation, Inc. This public site provides free access to 40 herbs.
The
Rosenthal Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons has an excellent directory
of databases which includes links to most of the resources cited.
The
Cochrane Library
The Cochrane Library has a separate field set aside for meta-analyses of clinical
trials information on complementary medicines. While a limited number of these
meta-analyses have been performed, those that have been performed are very
useful summations of the evidence in relation to safety and efficacy.
