Social Health Science
Research
A major role of ACCMER is to research the use and understanding
of complementary medicine by the Australian population in general
and by health professionals in particular. Complementary medicines
can potentially interact with conventional medications, leading
to serious consequences such as potentiation of bleeding. ACCMER
has embarked on utilisation surveys of the general population aimed
at providing essential data that will enable risks such as these
to be quantified and preventative measures to be devised.
Other social science research undertaken by ACCMER includes needs
analysis of health professions regarding education requirements
for complementary medicine and socio-cultural mapping of the complementary
medicine professions.
