Background information

Consumers have become increasingly interested in the possibilities offered by complementary medicine and there is a recognised need for an independent reference point for scientifically based research into the interface between complementary and traditional health practices.

Consumer interest in more information and products has become significant and many health professionals are moving to respond to this demand. At the same time, Government has recognised the potential benefits and need for greater regulation of the sector.

Southern Cross University (SCU) and the University of Queensland (UQ) joined together in 2001 to establish a collaborative research and education centre, the Australian Centre for Complementary Medicine Education & Research (ACCMER). The objective has been to provide an independent reference point built on each institution's substantial strengths in research, innovation and teaching.

Known most commonly as ACCMER, the Australian Centre for Complementary Medicine Education & Research aims to provide the evidence related to complementary medicines.
