Areas of responsibility
As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Relations), Professor Zimmer is the chief external affairs officer for The University of Queensland, responsible for directing and executing an ambitious fundraising agenda, and an integrated external relations program including communications, community engagement, and public affairs. The  Deputy Vice-Chancellor is a member of the Vice Chancellor's Executive and provides leadership and advice to the Vice-Chancellor on strategies to cultivate high-quality relationships with the University’s internal and external communities. His objective is to foster a deep and pervasive culture of public engagement to support The University’s mission and its goal of becoming one of the world’s preeminent public research universities.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Relations) is responsible for providing leadership in the development, administration and management of all functions and matters relating to a comprehensive fundraising program (including the University of Queensland Endowment Fund), their support services, and relations with alumni, business, the professions, government, the media, and the community. He is responsible for the leadership of the Advancement Office, the Office of Marketing and Communications, Protocol Office and Customs House.

Biography
Professor Zimmer is a Professor of Accounting and held the post of Executive Dean, Faculty of Business, Economics and Law for 10 years before his appointment to the role of Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Relations) in January 2009. He was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Relations) in May 2009. Throughout his academic career, he has held a number of visiting academic appointments at outstanding business schools including: INSEAD (Fontainebleau); the University of Michigan at Ann-Arbor; and the University of Washington in Seattle.

He is a Fellow of the Australian Society of Practicing Accountants; a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants; a Fellow of the Leaders of Social Sciences, Australia; a Member of the American Accounting Association; and the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand.

He has held a number of board memberships including Chairman of the Mater Medical Research Institute Ltd (August 2006 - current). The Mater Medical Research Institute (“MMRI”) is a small but fast growing company which has the objective of cancer cure related science and developing it further to the point of being commercially viable (“translational research”). Professor Zimmer is also a member of the Advisory Board, Australian Defence College, Canberra . This board is responsible for overseeing the development and application of defence force policy regarding undergraduate and postgraduate education.
