Areas of responsibility
As Executive Dean, Professor Walker is responsible for the academic leadership and management of the Faculty. The role includes accountability for all aspects of academic programs (teaching and research), staff management and resource allocation for schools and centres in the Faculty, as well as representation of the Faculty and University to the wider community.
Professor Walker was appointed as Executive Dean for Engineering, Physical Sciences and Architecture at the University of Queensland in February 2006 and then Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science from January 2009. Prior to UQ, he spent 5 years at the Australian Research Council (ARC) in Canberra, after a number of years as a senior scientist in CSIRO, mainly based in Hobart in Tasmania.
Professor Walker has a BSc (Hons 1) from the University of Sydney, and a PhD from the University of Tasmania. He has worked in a number of fields such as atmospheric pollution, remote sensing, coastal oceanography and water quality, and medical research (cardiology). He has extensive experience in collaborative research, in conjunction with Government agencies, utilities, and private industry. As Executive Dean of the UQ Faculty of Science, Professor Walker is responsible for the leadership and governance of one of the largest Science groupings in Australia, with approximately 1200 (equivalent full-time) staff, and about 8500 (equivalent full-time) students.
