Areas of responsibility
Professor Western is the Acting Director of the Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) and is responsible for its strategic directions, scientific appointments, budgets, performance, representation and reporting to stakeholders.
Professor Western was appointed Acting Director of the Institute for Social Science Research in March 2008. He was previously a Co-Director of The University of Queensland Social Research Centre which he helped establish. He is a sociologist whose research focuses on the impact of large-scale social change on social and economic inequality, politics and culture, and family and household formation in contemporary societies like Australia. Mark is also undertaking research into statistical methods for longitudinal social science data.
Mark Western was previously employed at the University of Tasmania and the Australian National University. He has been an Honorary Fellow at the University of Wisconsin Madison, a Hallsworth Visiting Professor in Political Economy at the University of Manchester and is an International Fellow of the Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality at Stanford University. He is a member of the College of Experts of the Australian Research Council, a Chief Investigator on the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security, and a member of the National Executive Committee of the Australian Social Science Data Archive.
