Honours Program

Students intending to take Honours should include RELN1000 in their Undergraduate Major in Studies in Religion. A total of 16 units Studies in Religion subjects must be taken, including at least 10 units from one "Major" area, e.g. Contemporary, Eastern, Western etc. Students wishing to take Honours should have a GPA in RELN subjects of at least 5.5.

Successful completion of an Honours degree brings considerable advantages, not least in opening up possibilities for postgraduate study in Australia and abroad.

 

RELN6000: METHODOLOGY OF STUDIES IN RELIGION

4 units (2C)

Sem I, Thur 4-6

Practical introduction to the methods and procedures applied in researching religion, and theoretical examination of the major methodological issues currently being debated within the discipline.

 

RELN6001: INDIVIDUAL HONOURS STUDY UNIT (Sem 1 Full-time)
RELN6002: INDIVIDUAL HONOURS STUDY UNIT (Sem 2 Part-time)

4 units

Study programme developed for & by individual student, supervised by member of staff after approval by Head of Department.

 

RELN6003: THESIS (Sem 1:2 Full time students)
RELN6004: THESIS (Year: Part-time students)

8 units

Supervised work on thesis (approx. 25,000 words) with class teaching in scholarship & bibliography.

 

ASSESSMENT

RELN6000
Seminar participation, seminar papers(2) and final paper. Examined as above.

RELN6001/2 & RELN6003/4
Examined by Supervisor and one other examiner. The second examiner may choose to remain anonymous. The second examiner's report will be released to the examinee. In the event of disparity between examiners, and after consultation with them, the Head may appoint a third examiner. The Head will then determine the grade in consultation with the supervisor and other examiners, edit and release reports.

 

CLASS OF HONOURS

Recommendations on the class of Honours degree to be awarded are made by the Department to the Dean of Arts for transmission through the Board of the Faculty of Arts to the Senate of the University. Recommendations that the degree be awarded are determined by a meeting of the staff of the Department which reviews the entire record of an Honours student. The Department places most weight on performance in the final year, with particular attention given to the thesis (RELN6002/3). It also takes into consideration the grades obtained in advanced and introductory Studies in Religioncourses. The following are used as guidelines by the Department in determining its recommendations on grades of Honours.

Honours Class IIA In RELN6000 & RELN6001/2 a GPA of 5.5 or higher and a grade of 6 in RELN6003/4
Honours Class IIB In RELN6000 & RELN6001/2 GPA of 5.5 or higher and a grade of 5 in RELN6003/4
Honours Class III In RELN6000 & RELN6001/2 GPA of 4 or higher and a grade of 4 in RELN6003/4
