Career Prospects

The Department of Studies in Religion attempts to ensure that students who complete a major or double major with us have not only a sound intellectual grasp of those various aspects of religion upon which they have focussed, but also a broad range of generic skills in critical reasoning, in research and writing sufficient to enable them, like many other arts graduates, to find employment in a variety of fields.

The Department achieves a high record of postgraduate completions, with twenty-seven Ph.D. students having graduated since 1990.

During August 1999, the Department of Studies in Religion underwent review, something which happens every seven years or so. Statistics on completions and employment of our graduates formed part of the review document and are reproduced below for the interest of any intending postgraduates.

Employment prospects for completed postgraduate doctoral candidates are excellent. Of the forty Ph.D. graduates since 1978, 70% are employed as academics in tertiary institutions in Australia and overseas, 17% are employed as religious professionals and 9% have made careers in areas as diverse as religious broadcasting, fund-raising and social work.
