Why study religion?

Religion is the way in which people, both individually and collectively interpret their world and give meaning to it.

Studying religions in this department can:

  • Provide you with an opportunity to learn about the historical origins and current development of the major religions practised in the world today
  • Offer you the chance to learn the languages of some faith-traditions and so to read their sacred texts
  • Give you some insight into the cultural settings in which the various religions have evolved, showing the ways in which human societies construct their own ideas of the divine and therefore their own sense of difference; consequently
  • Challenge you to be sensitive and informed about the great variety of ways in which societies and individuals interpret their world and respond to the questions of meaning and human existence; thus
  • Enabling you to quantify your own world-view and comprehend its construction within our society.

And all this is offered:

  • In an environment which is intellectually and experientially stimulating
  • By highly-qualified and friendly teachers who will encourage critical thought and the sharing of ideas
  • Along with input from practitioners of many religious traditions offering their personal experiences and reflections.
