Student
Rights and Responsibilities
SUBJECTS
- Students
should receive an accurate description of the content of a subject.
- Assessment
structure should be declared in the first week of classes, in discussion
with enrolled students, and placed in a written form and distributed
as soon as possible.
- It is
expected that subjects should generally have more than one item of assessment.
- Students
should be able to speak to staff members concerning any aspect of their
subject. Staff members should be available to see students by appointment
or at advertised times.
- Any matter
for complaint may be brought in confidence to the Head of Department.
The Head of Department will then inform the staff member of the substance
of the complaint.
CLASSES
- Classes
should be held at the times scheduled. In order to facilitate movement
between rooms, classes should normally commence on the hour and cease
at ten minutes before the hour.
- If for
legitimate reasons, a class is cancelled or held at another time, students
should be notified as soon as possible.
- Students
are required to fulfil the requirements of a subject with respect to
attendance at lectures, seminars and tutorials.
ASSESSMENT
- Students
should be able to expect that assignments submitted on time are available
at a stage early enough to enable comments to be utilised in the writing
of later assignments or in preparation for examinations. Assessment
of work should not normally take longer than three weeks.
- Students
should receive appropriate written comments on all assignments submitted
on time.
- Students
should be informed as to who has assessed their work, subject to the
provision of the Higher Degree Rules relating
to the assessment of theses and the Departmental regulations for Honours
work.
- Final
examinations should not be held before the end of the revision period.
In subjects without examinations, the final assignment should not be
required before the end of the revision period.
- Students
are required to keep a copy of any submitted assignment.
EXTENSIONS
- Students
should be informed of the policy concerning the late submission of assignments
in a subject. Such policy should recognise that there are valid reasons
for extensions beyond medical reasons.
- Students
may apply to their lecturers for extensions of time required for the
handing in of any written work.
- If a
student is unable to perform agreed tasks on schedule, the student should
inform the appropriate staff member as soon as possible prior to the
due date.
APPEALS
- Students
have a right to appeal to the Subject Examiner against a mark or grade,
and should be informed of the reasons why the particular mark or grade
was given. If unsatisfied, the student may further appeal to the Head
of Department. After consultation with the Subject Examiner, the Head
may then appoint an additional examiner. The Head of Department will
then determine the mark or grade in consultation with the original and
additional examiners. The Head will then provide a written statement
t o the student giving reasons for the final mark or grade.
Students should be aware that the university has rules and statutes which cover rights and obligations not dealt with in this departmental code. The Examination Rules and the University Statutes are explained in the University of Queensland Calendar, Vol.2.
Students should pay especially close attention to the rules on plagiarism.
