The
Department of Studies in Religion
in The University of Queensland in 1975. It is currently the largest religious studies department in Australia, with a rapidly growing postgraduate school and an international reputation for research.
Studies in Religion is devoted to the scholarly discussion and analysis of the role of religion in human life, in both the past and present. Offering courses in the major world religions, both eastern and western, as well as indigenous belief systems and new religious movements, our aim is to come to an understanding of the phenomenon of religion by applying the methods developed by historians, philosophers, psychologists, sociologists and linguists.
Many courses offered by this department are suitable for combination with courses in Anthropology & Sociology, Classics & Ancient History, English, History, Philosophy, Psychology and Social Work. A significant number of courses is available in comparative studies, western and eastern studies, biblical studies, language studies and contemporary studies.
May I take this opportunity of welcoming you to the department if you are a new student and of welcoming you back if you are continuing your studies with us. We endeavour to maintain our reputation as a department committed to both research and teaching, and one attuned to the needs of both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The preceding years have been successful ones for both staff and students in the Department of Studies in Religion and there is every reason to expect that the year 2001 will be just as successful.
