 Indigenous Student Information

The Unit has a major responsibility for facilitating and encouraging the access, participation and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the University of Queensland. To this end, there are staff in the Unit who assist students with academic matters such as choosing subjects, accessing literature, computer and other resources. Staff also assist with personal matters that impact upon students’ studies. It is a primary objective of Unit staff to encourage students to develop successful, independent learning habits.

There are over 200 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at the University of Queensland's St Lucia, Gatton, Ipswich and Herston campuses. This section provides information for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are, or wish to become, students at the University of Queensland.

Goorie Berrimpa Indigenous Students' Association

Goorie Berrimpa is the Indigenous Students' Association at the University of Queensland, and is a Department of the University of Queensland Union. Throughout the year, Goorie Berrimpa will be involved with a number of campaigns around issues effecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at UQ, and broader community. In particular, Goorie Berrimpa and the UQ Union organise major events to coincide with National Sorry Day, an annual event aimed at remembering the many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed by the authorities from their families. National Sorry Day events, and other events organised by Goorie Berrimpa aim to promote harmony between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. For more information about Goorie Berrimpa, contact the UQ Union on 3377 2200, visit the Goorie Berrimpa office on Level 4 of the Union Building or go to the webpage.
